Beyond the Classroom: Where Industry Experience Meets Beauty Education

Industry partnerships are more than guest appearances at Debutantes School of Beauty. They’re an essential part of how we connect education to the world beyond our classrooms.

At Debutantes School of Beauty, we believe some of the most valuable lessons come from the people who are out there doing the work.

That’s why we’re intentional about bringing industry professionals into our school. Not simply to demonstrate a technique, but to share their experiences, challenge how our students think, and introduce them to the many possibilities within the beauty industry.

We’re proud to welcome Joey Martinez, founder of The Barber Battalion in Yorkville, Illinois, as part of that commitment.

Meet Joey Martinez: The Barber Battalion

A 20-year U.S. Army veteran and licensed Illinois barber, Joey brings a perspective shaped by discipline, precision, and a commitment to his craft.

Founded in 2023, The Barber Battalion is a men’s grooming business built around technical excellence, professional standards, and the overall client experience.

But Joey’s work extends beyond the barbershop.

Through his educational programs, including Beyond the Fade, he helps barbers and cosmetologists strengthen their fundamentals, understand the reasoning behind their techniques, and build confidence in their decisions.

His philosophy emphasizes something we believe is incredibly important in education: Don’t just teach students what to do. Help them understand why they’re doing it.

It’s More Than a Haircut

There’s a difference between knowing the steps of a haircut and understanding how to create one.

Joey’s approach to education encourages students to think critically about the person sitting in their chair.

From consultations and head-shape assessments to fading, shear techniques, and clipper control, every decision serves a purpose.

Students learn to consider the client’s individual features, hair texture, desired outcome, and overall experience.

It’s an approach that encourages more than technical repetition. It develops problem-solving skills, professional judgment, and the confidence to adapt.

And those lessons extend well beyond men’s grooming.

Why Partnerships Like These Matter

The beauty industry is constantly evolving, and we believe beauty education should reflect that.

Our curriculum gives students the foundation they need. Our educators help them develop those skills every day. But inviting professionals like Joey into our school introduces another important piece of their education: perspective.

Students get to hear from someone who has built a business, developed a specialty, worked with real clients, and learned lessons that can’t always be found in a textbook.

These experiences help students connect what they’re learning today with the professionals they hope to become tomorrow.

They also reinforce something we want every student to understand: graduation isn’t the end of learning. It’s the beginning of a career that will continue to challenge, inspire, and shape them.

At Debutantes, we don’t view industry partnerships as an occasional bonus.

We see them as an essential part of providing a well-rounded beauty education.

Creating Opportunities Beyond the Classroom

Our goal has never been to produce professionals who all think, work, or create the same way.

We want students to discover their strengths, explore different specialties, ask better questions, and build careers that reflect who they are.

By connecting our students with professionals like Joey, we’re creating opportunities for them to see what’s possible and understand the dedication required to get there.

We’re grateful to Joey Martinez and The Barber Battalion for sharing their knowledge and supporting the next generation of beauty professionals.

Because when experienced professionals invest in education, they’re doing more than teaching a class.

They’re helping shape the future of our industry.

Different on Purpose. Unique Like You.
